Built in 1944, our building first opened its doors as the Modern Appliance Company, owned and operated by local entrepreneur Margaret Bassin. From refrigerators and stoves that symbolized postwar innovation, to the hum of small engines being repaired in the Quonset hut out back by 1948, this corner of Dogwood Drive has always been a hub of energy, enterprise, and community.
In the late 1940s, a classic cinder-block gas station joined the row of storefronts, welcoming travelers and locals alike. For decades, the property stood as a crossroads where neighbors gathered, businesses thrived, and stories were made.
